Kluif working on Pitch for Jheronimus Bosch 500

Studio Kluif, alongside two other great design studio's, was invited to participate in the pitch for "Jheronimus Bosch 500". This involves developing a top brand identity for this enormous multidisciplinary event. In 2016 the city of 's-Hertogenbosch will commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the painter Jheronimus Bosch. The local municipality decided in June 2009 that the Jheronimus Bosch 500 project should be a structure strengthening program for the city that will span over several years, so that in the coming years the city will experience a build up to the climax of the project in 2016. The municipality and the external project managers Martijn Sanders and Ad 's-Gravesande are equally convinced that the project at hand extends itself beyond the cultural domain. Jheronimus Bosch 500 serves a higher ambition and can be a lever for the long-term development of the city, also strengthening the social connection between its inhabitants and the structure of the city itself. During the month of October we expect to be able to share more news on development of this pitch.

Kluif meets Meertens

Studio enjoyed working on 'Sweet Fever'. The result is a book which wonderfully showcases the amazingly rich art of Meertens.

After attending the Faculty of Art at the York St John University, the Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven and the Faculty of Art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Hans Meertens graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2000. In that same year he was nominated for the Piet Bakker Prize, an incentive prize for young Utrecht School of the Arts graduates with outstanding talent. In the following years Meertens’ artworks were exhibited in a variety of artist-run spaces and galleries. Giulio Cesare & Co Gallery in ’s-Hertogenbosch (NL) presented Meertens’ first solo exhibition “Solo Inferno” in 2004, soon followed by a second solo exhibition in 2005, titled “Invocatio!”. More recently, Meertens’ artworks were on view at the Museum of Gorcum (2006), Caelum Gallery, New York (2006), Gallery Clifford, Odense and Daugård, Denmark (2007-2008) and Monkdogz Urban Art Gallery in New York (2006 -2008). An important part of his work is included in the collections of enthusiastic collectors around the world and Meertens has been commissioned by major companies such as Porsche, Nedap and Metro. After winning a commercial pitch, five young artists -among which Hans Meertens- were commissioned by Ajax Amsterdam to create a painting to be included in both the Annul Report 2006 and an exclusive charity auction held by a Sotheby’s auctioneer in 2007, to raise funds for the Johan Cruyff Foundation. From late 2007 until early 2008 an overview of Meertens’ paintings and drawings were exhibited at Gallery Clifford, Odense, during his solo exhibition “Counterphobia”. Monkdogz Urban Art Gallery presented Meertens’ first solo exhibition in New York in April/May 2008. This exhibition -entitled “Remote Control”- featured both retrospective and new works. (To open the Monkdogz press release click here, for pictures of the opening reception by photographer Sam Chadwick click here). From September 13 until October 12 2008, Gallery Clifford in Daugård presented "Sweet Fever"; Meertens’ fifth solo exhibition and his second in Denmark.

From 2001 until summer 2007, before devoting himself completely to his art, Meertens combined his work as an autonomous artist with a teaching profession in Art and Cultural Social Studies at secundary school Het Nicolaaslyceum in Amsterdam. As a singer/songwriter (File Under Shane) Meertens independently released two critically acclaimed cd’s; Soul On Fire (2006) and Trenches (2005). A comprehensive catalogue of Meertens’ art will be published in 2009.

Kluif in Super Holland Design

The anxiously awaited follow-up to Holland Design, Super Holland Design explores new functionality in contemporary Dutch design. Featured designers transform concepts into strong messages, using new techniques and technologies. Dutch designers are inspiring exciting interactions between design and its users, compelling us to rethink the meaning of design itself. They question every aspect of design, creating new concepts, processes and formats, bravely pushing the limits of user participation and the designer's role. Featuring: Catalogtree, De Designpolitie, Experimental Jetset, Studio Kluif, Dennis Koot, Harmen Liemburg, Lust, Thonik, Toko and others.

Review: ‘Supremely intelligent and witty. This volume on the highly advanced world of Dutch graphics features a caped superhero on the cover, in case you didn't know that designing denizens of The Netherlands is reinventing, with crusading zeal, the way mere mortals engage their surroundings.’ Metropolitan Home ‘If you thought that instruction manuals and statistical graphics could never be sexy, think again. SHD is focused on the best of Dutch graphic design and gets the cover it fully deserves: it's ironic, witty, stands out from the crowd.’ We Make Money Not Art

Eat Love

By Marije Vogelzang
Designed by Kluif!

Studio Kluif had the honour to design Marije Vogelzang’s first ‘Eat Love’ publication! After her graduation from the Design Academy in Eindhoven in 2000 Marije Vogelzang has been designing eating concepts. Her interest is in the verb ‘to eat’. She does not only deeply think about what is on a plate (if there is a plate at all), but she also thinks about everything that surrounds the act of eating. The atmosphere, the people involved, the stories behind the ingredients, the taste and texture, sound, smell and colour of food and the way it is prepared and served. She looks into the effect of food on our body and follows the journey food makes from seed all the way to becoming poop. Thinking about all this and working and experimenting in her studio and restaurant and by creating eating experiences for her clients she has developed her own unique way of looking at eating from a designer’s point of view. This book makes her vision and spectacular eating concepts available for the first time for a large group of people who are interested in food and the culture and experience of eating. The introduction is written by design critic Louise Schouwenberg and places Marije Vogelzang’s work within the context of Dutch design, international design and trends in food, eating culture and society.
